Contemporary Sibling Portraits

Portrait photography is such a rich and compelling field, and I’m in awe of photographers who work with people as subjects day in and day out.. it is truly an art form, one that requires a certain personal energy. I’ve taken portraits a little bit here and there, mostly for friends and family, or by request.

These two portraits are among the favorites I’ve done because I think I managed to reach the essence of my niece, Emma (above) and my nephew, Noah (below). Often subjects will smile to an unnatural point - we tend to go on autopilot this way - but moments of pause offer precious windows, and capturing those fragments in time can lead to deeper, more meaningful portraits that we come to treasure.

I’m grateful to my niece and nephews who agreed to let me take their pictures over the years. On some visits I never bothered to get out my camera, but I’m really glad to have memories for those times that I did.
