Something about Baby Ingrid, this sweet, “person”able, little lamb that I photographed, brings to mind the treasured children’s story, The Little Prince, or Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. I adore the premise of this classic novella. First published in 1943, The Little Prince and its theme that love is all important is completely heartwarming.

My mom gave me this hardback edition of The Little Prince as a special gift in the 1970s when I, too, was little, and I’ve managed to keep it after all of these years and dozens of moves..I cherish it. In chapter 2 of the story, the Little Prince asks the pilot narrator, “If you please - draw me a sheep”. The Little Prince is from planet B-612, and he wishes to have a sheep to graze and keep problematic Baobab trees from overtaking it. The pilot sketches several versions of a sheep, but the prince isn’t satisfied until the pilot draws a box with a sheep inside. This way the Little Prince could imagine the sheep just the way he wanted it.

In my mind, baby Ingrid would be the ideal sheep for keeping the Baobabs at bay. It is sweet stories and connections like these that bring fun and meaning to my work. And for those of you who know my portrait of Siggy, Siggy is the mama of Ingrid.

Baby Ingrid makes a great baby shower gift! Click to shop here if you know any parents-to-be, or if you’d like to purchase a print as unique wall decor for your own baby or toddler’s room.

Bon voyage, Petit Prince xxox
