For the love of film

Every so often I gravitate to using one of my film cameras instead of reaching for my “go to” digital SLR. I occasionally prefer the slower pace of photographing with film, including the anticipation of wondering what has/ has not turned out. It might sound strange in our era of “instant knowing” but there is something really lovely about returning to the multi-layered/ multi-step analogue process. Emily Dickinson’s line, “I dwell in possibility” resonates for me big-time, and working with film is no exception.

In addition to the dreamy mood and aesthetics of shooting with film, the practical constraint of having just 12 - 15 exposures per roll is a welcome change to (essentially) limitless digital captures. Yes, we can take as many images as we like with a digital camera, and this can lead to more experimentation, but then there is a lot more time spent on the editing side, more hours at the computer.

At this point in my photographic journey, I love having the ability to use both types of cameras, and am relieved that film continues to be available for the days when I reach for one of my Holgas, my Hasselblad or Mamiya medium format film cameras.
