In Praise of Aegean Bee Goddesses

Melissa, Goddess of Bees

Melissa, Goddess of Bees

In Greek mythology, the bumble bee was believed to be a sacred insect that bridged the natural world to the underworld. This photograph, which I’m calling Melissa, Goddess of Bees, was taken in early morning sunlight on the island of Crete. In ancient Greek/ Minoan civilization, Melissa was the goddess of bees. The name comes from the Greek word μέλισσα (mélissa), "bee", which in turn comes from μέλι (meli), "honey" (all ref Wikipedia).

As I watched busy bees pollinating flowers during our most recent trip to Rethymno, I thought about the full circle connection from bees to their golden-amber-hued honey that’s served at Greek breakfast tables. Fresh Greek yogurt and local sourced honey is nothing short of dreamy. This photo is in celebration of past and present Aegean bee goddesses.
